The 1890s gold camp nicknamed 'The Widowmaker' because silica dust from its dry-crushed quartzite killed hundreds of millers; it produced half of Nevada's ore output around 1900 and emptied after 1909. Extensive stone ruins and mill terraces survive on public land about 16 slow miles of rough, rocky road off US-93 south of Caliente — high clearance required, no water, no cell service. Open shafts, adits, and collapsing rock walls are everywhere; this is a genuine remote-desert site where a mistake goes unwitnessed.
