Founded in 1897 as a supply hub for Panamint Range gold camps, Ballarat peaked near 500 residents before fading by 1917; its adobe jail, morgue ruins, and the Manson Family's abandoned truck still draw desert travelers. A live-in caretaker runs a seasonal general store, and visitors are welcome via the graded dirt road off the Trona-Wildrose Road. Access is legal and easy in a passenger car in dry weather, but this is remote Death Valley country — no fuel, no cell service, and lethal summer heat, so come provisioned.
