Zzyzx (Soda Springs)

OtherEasy difficulty● Green hazardCalifornia

Radio evangelist Curtis Howe Springer squatted on this federal soda-springs parcel from 1944 to 1974, running the sham Zzyzx Mineral Springs health resort until the BLM evicted him. The palm-lined compound on Soda Dry Lake is now the CSU Desert Studies Center inside Mojave National Preserve, its vintage buildings maintained for researchers. The 4.5-mile Zzyzx Road off I-15 is open to the public, who can legally stroll Lake Tuendae and the grounds; keep clear of occupied research buildings and carry water — it is still the Mojave.
