An 1870s silver-lead camp that peaked at several thousand residents, Darwin survives as a semi-ghost of a few dozen artists and desert loners amid trailer-and-cabin decay west of Death Valley. The paved spur road and townsite streets are public, but most standing buildings and the extensive mine workings above town are private property with residents who guard their quiet. Photograph from the streets, ask before poking around, and steer well clear of the open shafts and unstable mill structures on the hill.
