This self-sufficient state mental hospital operated from 1912 to 1973 on an Olmsted-designed campus outside Sedro-Woolley, housing over 2,000 patients who worked its vast farm. The core campus is now the partially occupied SWIFT Center where the historic buildings are sealed and patrolled, while the old farm's hollow dairy barns and milking sheds stand in the publicly accessible Northern State Recreation Area. Walking the trails past the ruins is legal and popular; entering any structure is not — the barns are structurally failing and the campus buildings carry asbestos and active security.
