Golden grew in the 1890s as a temperance-minded mining camp on Coyote Creek — a boomtown famous for having churches but no saloons — and emptied when the placer gold gave out. Four original buildings, including the iconic 1892 church and the store/post office, are preserved at Golden State Heritage Site, managed by Oregon State Parks with interpretive signs. It sits a few miles off I-5 near Wolf Creek with free day-use access; hazards amount to little more than uneven ground and poison oak along the creek.
