A 1911 dry-farming colony that promoters billed as a future metropolis before drought, water-rights losses, and jackrabbit and cricket plagues emptied it; the last residents left by the 1940s-50s. The ruined arch of the Lincoln School and the Hotel Metropolis foundation stand on open range about 12 miles northwest of Wells via graded gravel roads, freely accessible with interpretive markers. The unstable century-old masonry can shed brick — look, don't climb.
