One of the West's most intact unrestored mining towns, with about 70 1860s-1900s buildings in the Owyhee Mountains, never burned and never modernized — most are privately owned summer cabins. The historic Idaho Hotel operates seasonally and visitors may walk the streets; the graded mountain road from ID-78 near Murphy is typically open June through October and snowbound otherwise, with high clearance advised. A living, cared-for ghost town: legal and safe if you treat every building as someone's property and come fueled and provisioned.
