An 1866 frontier Army post where the Buffalo Soldiers served during the Apache campaigns, later a pioneering Army tuberculosis hospital and VA facility; it is now a National Historic Landmark near Silver City. The parade ground and streets are open to the public and the preservation society runs a small museum and guided walking tours, but the dozens of vacant early-1900s hospital-era buildings are deteriorating and off-limits inside. Respect the building closures — lead paint, asbestos, and failing floors are documented problems — and stick to the grounds and tours.
