Job Harriman's socialist utopian colony housed roughly 900 people on the Mojave's edge from 1914 until water disputes collapsed it in 1918. The stone-and-concrete hotel chimneys, cobblestone pillars, and silo ruins stand just off Highway 138 east of Palmdale and are a California Historical Landmark that visitors wander freely. Expect typical open-desert hazards — crumbling unstable masonry, rattlesnakes, broken glass, and summer heat — and note that periodic fencing and no-trespassing postings come and go on portions of the parcel.
