An 1867 gold rush town on the Sweetwater that briefly held ~2,000 people and launched Wyoming's 1869 women's-suffrage act via legislator William Bright. Now a State Historic Site with more than 20 restored, furnished buildings and the conserved Carissa Mine complex; open seasonally (roughly mid-May to September) with a modest fee, reached by a short gravel spur off WY-28. A managed, legal, family-friendly site — winter access is limited and the surrounding high desert is exposed.
