Monumental 1890s Kirkbride-plan asylum with a castle-like central tower, closed as the Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center in 2005 and city-owned since 2007. After 18-plus failed redevelopment deals, the rear wards and 1950s additions were demolished with state funds, but the iconic tower and main front ranges still stand mothballed, and the city continued entertaining redevelopment proposals into the mid-2020s. Friends of the Kirkbride volunteers periodically offer sanctioned tours and events — the legal way in; otherwise the sealed building is actively watched by the city. Interior hazards are the usual asylum menu of asbestos, lead paint, and failing plaster.
