Milford Mine Memorial Park

OtherEasy difficulty● Green hazardMinnesota

Site of Minnesota's worst mining disaster: on February 5, 1924, Foley Lake broke through into the Milford underground iron mine and drowned 41 men in under twenty minutes, with only seven escaping. Crow Wing County developed the Cuyuna Range site into Milford Mine Memorial Park beginning in 2010, and it is listed on the National Register as the Milford Mine Historic District. Today boardwalks and trails cross the wetland to interpret shaft locations, relics, and a memorial naming the dead. Fully legal county park, open dawn to dusk; the flooded mine features are viewed from boardwalks, so hazards are minimal.
