The famous hilltop Bowen Building — centerpiece of Dr. George Zeller's pioneering 1902 asylum and one of the Midwest's most storied haunted ruins — was demolished in early 2017 after restoration efforts failed; it is included here as a historically major site that is largely gone. What remains are the four patient cemeteries (including the grave tied to the 'Graveyard Elm' legend), scattered outbuildings, and the Pollak Hospital, which hosts organized ghost tours and events. Visiting the cemeteries and taking a paid tour is legal and low-risk; there is little left to trespass into.
