Cahawba was Alabama's first permanent state capital (1820-1826) and later a cotton port and Civil War prison site before repeated flooding emptied it; today columns, cemeteries, streets, and building ruins survive as Old Cahawba Archaeological Park. Run by the Alabama Historical Commission with a visitor center, it is fully legal and interpreted. Watch for heat, snakes, and uneven ground, but this is a managed park in every sense.
Vestige documents abandoned & historic places for education and preservation. Always obtain permission before visiting and follow local law.
