The five-story brick shell of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a Civil War-era textile mill burned by Sherman's troops in 1864 after its workers were deported north, stands beside Sweetwater Creek in Sweetwater Creek State Park. A short, popular trail leads to an overlook of the ruins, and the site is fully legal; the interior is fenced and enterable only on ranger-guided hikes. Beyond ordinary trail footing and swift water in the creek, hazards are managed.
