Opened in 1925 as Washington DC's institution for the developmentally disabled, Forest Haven closed in 1991 after a federal lawsuit exposed decades of abuse and neglect, and beds, wheelchairs, and patient records still litter the buildings. The campus remains fully abandoned but is actively guarded and patrolled by U.S. Park Police, with trespassers regularly cited or arrested. Inside, collapsing floors, black mold, and residual asbestos make this one of the riskiest hospital complexes on the East Coast.
