Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike (Old PA Pike Trail)

TunnelEasy difficulty● Green hazardPennsylvania

A 13-mile stretch of America's first superhighway, bypassed in 1968, including the Rays Hill and Sideling Hill tunnels near Breezewood. Long known as the Pike 2 Bike, it is now owned and managed as the Old PA Pike (TOPP) Trail by the Bedford-Fulton Joint Recreation Authority, which has won recent grants (2023-2025) toward tunnel rehabilitation. Walking and biking are legal and popular, but the route is unmaintained in feel: the mile-plus tunnels are pitch black and dripping, so bring real lights and watch for broken pavement and debris.
