Sutro Baths

OtherEasy difficulty● Green hazardCalifornia

Adolph Sutro's 1896 glass-roofed swimming palace, once the world's largest indoor bath complex, burned in 1966 and survives as concrete foundations and cisterns at Lands End. The ruins are managed by the National Park Service within Golden Gate NRA, with free public trails down from the visitor center. Access is fully legal and heavily trafficked, but stay off the seaward rocks: sneaker waves have swept visitors from the terrace and cave area, and the algae-slick concrete is treacherous at high tide.
