Ashcroft

OtherEasy difficulty● Green hazardColorado

An 1880s silver boomtown up Castle Creek that briefly outgrew nearby Aspen before collapsing by 1885. Preserved by the Aspen Historical Society, it remains an easy, legal visit: a paved road leads to the site, a small day fee is collected, and interpretive signs and summer docents cover the ~10 surviving buildings. Winter access is by ski/snowshoe from the plowed trailhead; hazards are minimal at this managed site.
