Detroit's island zoo closed in 2002 and its overgrown elevated boardwalk loop became one of the city's iconic semi-open urbex draws for two decades. Included here as a historically major site now gone: the Michigan DNR began demolition in November 2025, clearing the cages, buildings, and rotting boardwalk to create a nature area and trails. As of 2026 the site is a fenced active demolition/construction zone inside otherwise fully public Belle Isle Park. There is nothing left to explore — enjoy the rest of the island legally instead.
