Rush boomed on zinc mining from the 1880s through World War I and was fully abandoned by the 1960s; its weathered cabins, smelter remains, and mine openings are now preserved inside Buffalo National River. The NPS maintains a road, interpretive trail, and signage, so visiting is legal and easy — but structures are fenced off due to fragility and every mine adit is gated. Stay out of the buildings and shafts; collapse, bad air, and bats are the reasons the closures exist.
