Furnaces #6 and #7 of U.S. Steel's Homestead Works, built 1907 and cold since 1978, are among the last surviving pre-WWII blast furnaces in the country and a designated National Historic Landmark (2006). The nonprofit Rivers of Steel maintains the site in arrested decay and runs guided industrial tours, arts programs, and photography workshops roughly May through October. This is the legal way to stand inside a 92-foot blast furnace; outside tour hours the site is fenced and monitored, and environmental remediation of legacy soil contamination is ongoing.
