Beaux-Arts concrete rail depot built 1910, abandoned since the early 1970s but structurally intact thanks to its poured-concrete construction. After decades as Gary's signature ruin, the nonprofit Decay Devils, the City of Gary, and Digital Equity LLC broke ground in 2023 to convert it into a fiber 'Smart House,' tech training center, and public space, so the era of casual walk-in exploration is closing. Expect an active construction site with fencing and workers rather than an open ruin; falling debris and unstable floors persist in unrenovated sections.
