A short-lived 1898-1909 coastal fort at the tip of Napatree Point, abandoned after war games exposed a fatal blind spot in its field of fire, then scoured by the 1938 hurricane that erased the surrounding cottage colony. Batteries Wooster and Crawford survive, overgrown in the dunes of the Watch Hill Conservancy's protected barrier beach, reached only by a roughly 1.5-mile soft-sand walk from Watch Hill. Visiting the concrete shells is allowed, but railings and steel plates installed in 2011 seal the flooded lower levels — respect them, and stay on paths to protect nesting-bird habitat.
