The massive 1844-1871 limestone fort at Rouses Point, nicknamed 'Fort Blunder' after its 1816 predecessor was accidentally begun on what was then Canadian soil. Mostly scavenged for stone in the 1930s, its surviving bastions, casemates, and officer's quarters loom at the mouth of Lake Champlain on private land, sold in 2023 to Canadian buyers who talk of revitalization. Preservationists warn the remaining masonry is at risk of catastrophic collapse, and access without permission is trespassing; most visitors view it from the Route 2 bridge or by kayak. Falling stone and deep water make interior scrambling a bad bet.
