Once a 9,000-patient state hospital opened in 1931, Rockland's sprawling abandoned campus was a legendary Northeast urbex destination — but most of the classic vacant buildings were leveled in 2018 after JPMorgan Chase bought a 60-acre parcel for a data center, and the state has moved to demolish more deteriorated structures. A shrinking cluster of older vacant buildings still stands interspersed with an active psychiatric hospital, meaning state Office of Mental Health police patrol the grounds. Interiors that remain are asbestos-laden and structurally rough; arrests here are a real possibility, not urbex folklore.
